l have bought a 1998 tdi you can crank it till the battery goes flat using the glow pugs it wont start.when u eventually get it going it will not pull untill it gets warm then as long as u dont leave it more than a couple of hours every thing will be ok. one thing l have noticed is the glow plug light only stops on for about 5-10 seconds help

need new glowplugs?? apparently the metal crystallises over time and doesnt heat as well, had this with escort tdi - replaced with cheap

My glowplug light never stays on for more than a couple of seconds. It does sound more fuel related than purely electrics. When it starts is there a lot of black / white smoke? (This would suggest that fuel is getting in there on not firing, no smoke suggests fuel isn't getting in there).

clouds of black smoke if you give it a shot of easi start it will go thought it could be glow plugs but before l got it a sparky said not anybody know how to check them or do you just replace and hope for best thanks, now realy ripping my hair out

The easy way is to check first of all that power is getting to them. Hold a test lamp between the top connection and earth, it should illuminate when some switches on the ignition. If thats not happening, check fuses / relays / wiring etc. If it illuminates it's unlikely that all four plugs would fail at the same time but theyre not too difficult or expensive to change, do a couple and see if it attempts to start. If you take a plug out and connect 12v across it as it's name suggests it should glow red hot.

I think it could be your temperature sensor telling the fuel and glow-plugs how cold it is. My glow plug light is on for about two seconds.

 

My other worry is the timing having slippped on the crankshaft pully, it is a known occasional problem on early diesels.

I forgot about the timing one, not heard of anyone suffering that for a while.

 

Whats the performance like once running?

hi just joined forum was having the same prob .i changed the fuel filter and moved the clips on the inlet and outlet pipes to different positions that stoped the air in the fuel, :lol: onthe glow plugs prob im still working on that

I think MM is on the right track. As far as I can determine, The glow plugs are on for that length of tme, only if something (the temperature sender) is telling the ECU that it is arctic type cold. This is possible because the temperature sender is in fact 2 devices, one drives the temperature gauge and the other is used by the ECU so that one may be toatlly U/S and the temperature gauge is behaving normally. :lol: :P

 

I reckon the only check is to replace it - costs
